Our History

STEP DC builds on the Generations Initiative in Deanwood since 2021 and the legacy of STEP efforts in Richmond, VA and the Generations Initiative in Atlanta, GA that lift and empower neighborhoods in the inner-city.

  • Living Faith Baptist Church and International Ministries had planned to launch The Generations Initiative in DC in March 2020, with the approval of Pastor Rev. Jasper Williams, Pastor of Salem Bible Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Pastor Williams had developed a curriculum titled The Generations Initiative Transforming Society Through Biblical Parenthood, copyrighted 2018.
  • COVID 19 delayed startup of the curriculum in 2020 and part of 2021.
  • During 2021, we met with two other pastors and one faith-based community ministry to share this vision of Generations Initiative DC. As we met through the winter months, we decided to launch parenting sites in the spring of 2022 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Ward 8, SE DC and two sites in partnership with the Dream Center Ward 8, DC (one site at Langston Lane Apartments and Douglas Knolls public housing sites). The other site was launched at Bethesda Baptist Church in Ward 5, NE DC. These sites did launch in March and
    April 2022.
  • We sponsored a Mother’s Day cookout for the parents and their families with the Dream Center. With Immanuel Baptist we supported the annual community day with four other churches.
  • Toward the end of 2022, and starting 2023, Living Faith directed it specific focus back to the Deanwood community in Ward 7, NE DC, meeting with community leaders and some pastors.
  • By the summer of 2023, we were able to sponsor or co-sponsor with community leaders and Pastor Vernon a Unity Day in the community giving food boxes with food for seven days to 200 families. Along with the community leadership and other churches, we co-sponsored a back-to-school carnival.
  • With the support of CRU with a matching fund grant (support from other churches, faith-based ministries, family and friends) were able to give
support to some volunteers and program supplies. We have been able to
offer small scholarships to some of the families to support their child with
    some college expenses.
  • In January 2023, we began to have a more involved discussion with the
Racial Reconciliation Group (RRG), in which we been associated with for at least two plus years. The RRG relationship led us to become more focused and this led to Deanwood Ward 7 NE DC as our target community. Having already built relationships with other churches, community leaders, other
faith-based non-profits and community non-profits in October 2023, we were able to start our first parenting class in Deanwood. Presently there are 10 parents involved.
  • Surveys and assessments reveal needs that exceed our capacity. As of January 2024, along with RRG leadership, we began to build a new network of churches, reconnecting with several faith-based ministries and non-profit community service-based organizations. We have now moved toward establishing a new faith-based Community Development Corporation. This vision and new phase will be presented May 2024.
